About THE THEME FOR THE YEAR 2009 AWARD

That we live and work in an age of uncertainty and complexity portrayed by various crisis and disaster, emerged from internal and external threats as seen in events such as the ongoing Financial Crisis (2008-2009), the bombing if the World Trade Center (2001), SARS Epidemic (2003) and Natural Disaster (Tsunami (2004), Bukit Antarabangsa  Landslide (2008)), In order to mange the unexpected, to move from response to preparedness, and to mitigate potential disasters, it is essential for leaders and management team to acquired and practice the skills and tools of crisis management. These skills include effective decision making when time pressures or external events create a crisis atmosphere.

There is no doubt that organization face serious challenges in their day to day operations. However it does not constitute as a crisis unless the state of affairs is unstable and time is crucial requiring a decisive change. The common elements in a crisis are: a threat to the organization, the element of surprise, and a short decision time.

Events that may lead to a crisis are beyond measure. They include, but no limited to, industrial accident, product recall, natural calamity, internet security breaches and system breakdown, political unrest, workplace violence, economic downturn and hostile takeover attempt.

Crisis management consists of skills and techniques required to identify, assess, and cope with a crisis situation, In general, responsible management required the ability to set goals and resolve disagreements under the most stressful conditions. In the process, management must focus on the opportunities and threats facing organisations and present analysis and case studies of crisis prevention, crisis planning, and recovery and turnaround management.

Organization is encourage to be proactive in their crisis management activities by forecasting potential crises and planning how to deal with them. Nevertheless, should a crisis occurs, focus should be on measures to minimize damage and recovering from the crisis - often includes strong focus on communication strategy to assure stakeholders that recovery is underway.

The crisis management plan covers emergency response, business continuity management and contingency planning. The initiative and concerted efforts taken by the management and managers in managing crises in their organization and/or the community should be duly recognised and rewarded.

As an organization representing risk professionals in Malaysia, MARIM takes the lead to give recognitions to managers who have played crucial roles in mobilizing efforts and resources when their organization are confronted with real crisis.

About THE AWARD

The Award will be presented to an individual or a team of individuals who have worked towards implementing effective risk management strategies with the objective of minimising potential loss to their organisation before, during and after a crisis.

The Awards Presentation Ceremony will take place during MARIM's Gala Dinner on 16 June 2009 at First World Hotel, Genting Highlands. 

About THE PRIZES

  • The Winner will get a trophy, a laptop and a certificate
  • 2 Highly Commendable awards - each submission will get a trophy, cash vouchers and a certificate.

About THE PROCESS OF NOMINATION

  • This Award is open to all Malaysian registered organizations.
  • Candidates may either nominate themselves or be nominated by anyone who recognised their efforts
  • Candidates nominating themselves must have their nomination forms endorsed by their superiors.
  • Candidates need not possess the job title of "Risk Manager".
  • The Award is open to all individuals or organizations that have devised and implemented innovative and effective risk management strategies in managing crisis.
  • All nominations are strictly confidential.

About THE BENEFITS OF NOMINATION

  • The Winner and his/her employer will enjoy enhance reputation and prestige as a result of the publicity gained in winning such an Award.
  • In addition such a nomination provides the company with an opportunity to obtain deeper insight of its own risk management programmes and its strengths and weaknesses.
  • A token award will be given to the nominator of the first winner. 

About THE JUDGING CRITERIA

Entries will be judged based on their:

  • Company's crisis management objectives and how well they monitor the implementation.
  • Ability to identify and evaluate potential crises and able to develop possible scenarios.
  • Ability to select and apply the most practical, systematic, pro-active and cost-effective risk management techniques to minimize potential loss exposures.
  • Ability to secure high degree of cohesiveness and effective teamwork to achieve share objectives.
  • Ability to organize and monitor practical and effective pre- and post-operational changes/processes.
  • Effective continuous training programme with regular drills and exercise to stimulate different incident scenarios.
  • Effective communication strategy and infrastructure to ensure timely and consistent communication with internal and external stakeholders 
  • Close rapport with local authorities in the implementation of the programmes.
  • The capacity of infrastructure and operation to respond to and recover from emergencies.

About THE DECISION

  • A minimum of four independent specialist will be invited by the Executive Committe of MARIM to sit on the Panel of Judges who will determine the Award winner.
  • Based on the information received, the judges may call on the nominator for further clarification where necessary. Any evidence, be it statements or documents, which attest to and substantiate the nominee's achievements or contribution would be helpful.
  • None of the information recieved will be used for commercial purposes.
  • Judges decisions are FINAL and no correspondence will be entertained.
